{"id":535442,"date":"2014-09-18T14:20:07","date_gmt":"2014-09-18T19:20:07","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/2014.nashville.wordcamp.org\/?p=535442"},"modified":"2015-01-28T23:54:41","modified_gmt":"2015-01-29T04:54:41","slug":"john-housholder-talks-wordpress-development-and-the-nashville-wordpress-community","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/nashville.wordcamp.org\/2014\/john-housholder-talks-wordpress-development-and-the-nashville-wordpress-community\/","title":{"rendered":"John Housholder Talks WordPress Development and the Nashville WordPress Community"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>John Housholder, founder of\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.ahsodesigns.com\/\">Ah So Designs<\/a>\u00a0and co-organizer of\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/2014.nashville.wordcamp.org\/\">Nashville WordCamp<\/a>,\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/meetup.com\/NashvilleWordpress\/\">Nashville WordPress Meetup<\/a>, and\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/wpnashville.com\/\">WPNashville.com<\/a>, spoke with Nashville podcaster\u00a0<a title=\"Nashville Podcasting by Clark\" href=\"https:\/\/clarkbuck.com\/nashville-podcasting\/\" target=\"_blank\">Clark Buckner<\/a>\u00a0about organizing WP Nashville events, his thoughts on the local tech community, and offered a few tips on effectively communicating with developers.<\/p>\n<iframe loading=\"lazy\" width=\"100%\" height=\"166\" scrolling=\"no\" frameborder=\"no\" src=\"https:\/\/w.soundcloud.com\/player\/?url=https%3A%2F%2Fapi.soundcloud.com%2Ftracks%2F160094455&auto_play=false&hide_related=false&visual=false&show_comments=true&show_user=true&show_reposts=false&color=ff5500\"><\/iframe>\n<p>WordCamp Nashville grew out of a conversation at a local coffee shop in 2010 when Housholder ran into Randy Hicks and Scott McIntosh, who had started the WordPress Nashville meetup group. While McIntosh decided to handle the Meetup group, Hicks and Housholder focused on WordCamp.<\/p>\n<p>Housholder described himself as the visionary of the team while Hicks concerned himself with processes and getting things done. At the first WordCamp Nashville, around 200 people attended, most of whom were students or walk-ins. It is a now an annual event that gets better every year.<\/p>\n<p>As for meetups, WordPress user meetups take place on the third Monday of every month and attendance averages 40 people. WordPress developer meetups typically occur once a month on Tuesday mornings and feature a food provided by Chef Kenneth White from Supercollider. And now, any member of WordPress Nashville can suggest and organize an event, even something as simple as meeting for coffee one Saturday to help each other with websites.<\/p>\n<p><strong> WordPress and Nashville\u2019s Tech Community<\/strong><br \/>\nFor Housholder and thousands of users and developers throughout Nashville, WordPress is an \u00a0important tool for entrepreneurs to broadcast their ideas to the world. No longer is it just a blogging platform. WordPress has become a powerful content management system. Housholder cited the inspiring story of <a href=\"https:\/\/2014.nashville.wordcamp.org\/2014\/08\/13\/podcast-james-ashenhurst\/\">organic chemist-turned-blogger James Ashenhurst<\/a> as one great example of how much WordPress can change a person\u2019s life.<\/p>\n<p>For developers, WordPress is a great tool to start learning how to develop websites, beginning with CSS and HTML. Housholder\u2019s Ah So Designs can teach new developers to create their own powerful sites in three to four months. Ultimately, Housholder sees WordPress as a great platform for launching careers within the development community.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Communicating Well with Developers<\/strong><br \/>\nHousholder thinks there\u2019s no reason for entrepreneurs to have to learn how to code. What\u2019s more important is to discover what you\u2019re really good at doing or creating and making your passion your work. Still, businesses need a website, and they need to be able to clearly communicate what they want to developers who won\u2019t know the business\u2019s customers or goals.<\/p>\n<p>Understanding how developers operate helps:<\/p>\n<p>*They can be introverted and quiet.<br \/>\n*They are doers, makers, and crafters.<br \/>\n*They will execute a plan for you.<\/p>\n<p>Householder also suggested effective communication with developers does <strong>not<\/strong> including telling them,\u00a0\u201cJust hurry up, and get it done.\u201d\u00a0And, if they\u2019re looking at their computer screen, John says try to wait to them. A better time to talk to them might actually be to and from the bathroom, he\u00a0says.<\/p>\n<p>Moreover, developer evangelists can help people understand how to talk to developers, what to say to developers, and how best to provide information architecture pieces so that a business owner\u2019s website serves his or her needs.<\/p>\n<p><strong> What\u2019s Next for the WordPress Nashville Community?<\/strong><br \/>\nIn hopes of getting the business community involved, Housholder presented the idea of organizing a local web design and development award show for sites built on WordPress or those designed in Nashville. They\u2019re currently in search of partners who may want to help organize such a show.
